The 2007 convention and training was a success as we had 487 participating.  Covington Aircraft Turbine Division had 42 participants in PT6A Familiarization Course and 27 completing the 8 hours PT6A Familiarization Course & Troubleshooting & EDD training Sunday January 14.  The Sunday afternoon What’s Happening Session:  Insurance/ Geographic Information / Products had around 150 attending.   Doug Davidson -Davidson Solid Rock, Frank Kimmel -Kimmel Aviation Insurance, Sharon Watkins- Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp. & Darryl Marshall - Rebsamen Insurance addressed insurance issues.  Learon Dalby, Arkansas GIS Program Manager with the Arkansas Geographic Information Office discussed the newest version of the statewide digital aerial photography that will be available in early February.  Their web site is www.gis.state.ar.us.  Dr. Joe Reed, FMC Technical Support Specialist and Mason Bennett, Dow AgroSciences presented product information.

There were over 400 in the training Monday.   There were 261 completed PAASS registration forms. The Department of Aeronautics $2,000.00 State Airport Aid Grant 2399-06  (Agricultural Flight Safety) was used to pay NAAA for a part of the $16,660.00 cost of the PAASS Program (Professional Aerial Applicators Support System).   Also, there were 253 that recertified with the Arkansas State Plant Board.   The University of Arkansas Agri Development Council will receive $6,325.00 for the information presented by J. Ples Spradley, Associate Professor Department of Plant Pathology, and Cooperative Extension Service University of Arkansas.

The AAAA has members that share their time and talent with the NAAA.  Jeff Tidwell, Tidwell Flying Service, is one of those guys.   Jeff and Gaylon Stamps, Stamps Flying Service of Panhandle, Texas were the PAASS presenters.   The evaluations indicated the training was beneficial to the Arkansas aerial applicators.  The areas that received the most comments were in the Security, Human Factors and Spray Drift Modules.   It is good that many listed topics they would like to see in the future.  Tidwell duties were more than of a PAASS presenter; he handled all the computer and equipment for the convention training.  Wayne Keahey was elected NAAA treasurer in December.  Dennie Stokes continues to serve on the NAAA Board and Barry Joe Wilson is in the Syngenta Leadership Training.  David Glover will begin the leadership program this fall.  Jeff Tidwell will serve as the AAAA board representative to the NAAA.  Rod Thomas, NAAA president & has Thomas Helicopters in Idaho, addressed the benefits of being a member of the associations.

The agencies that have a direct impact on the ag aviation industry did an excellent job explaining their position:

John Knight, Department of Aeronautics Director, reiterated their ag safety support. Everyone had a chance to get the projects report, maps and airport charts.  Terry Lambert, Acting Flight Standard District Office Manger, addressed safety.

Jarrett "Mac" McFarlin,  FAASTeam Manager- Southwest Region ASW204, worked with the FAA –AAAA Safety Counselors; Dennie Stokes, Mark Hartz, Wayne Keahey, David Duch, Todd Hartley, Jason Hammond and Kirk Price.

Dr. Richard Ham, Assistant Federal Security Directory-Regulatory Inspection of Homeland
Security Transportation Security Administration Little Rock Hub stressed aviation operations and security.  If you see something you know is not right, make the call.  If you change your email account let the AAAA know.

Chief Ron Burks, Arkansas Highway Police – DOT, issues were those that came to the forefront this past summer.   The primary responsibility of the Highway Police is the statewide enforcement of commercial vehicle laws and regulations.  They will attend the three Spring Monday Evening Educational Programs to present their materials as well as a question and answer session.

Mike Thompson, Arkansas State Plant Board Pesticide Division Director, has worked diligently with the ag aviation industry and AAAA as issue or questions arise.  Thompson reviewed the past season and possible up-coming changes.   The ASPB, AHTD -HP, FAA, and TSA will be participating in the March 19, April 2 and April 9 programs.   It is time to mark your calendar for the Monday Evening Educational Program.

The Arkansas State Plant Board Drift Mitigation Training presented by Dr. Robert Wolf, Associate Professor Biological & Agricultural Engineering Kansas State University had 145 in this Tuesday session.

Dr. Wolf addressed issue like drift by ground rig.   Mike Thompson, Arkansas State Plant Board Pesticide Division Director, contracted with Dr. Wolf to make sure the drift training was available.    We appreciate all the work the ASPB did during the convention training. Susie Nichols, Enforcement, Jed Bicker and Annelie Browder assisted and administered the ASPB test.

Todd Hartley, president, presided over the meetings Monday and Tuesday. Barry Joe Wilson, vice president, did the Sunday afternoon session.  Hartley took advantage of the 8-hour training offered by Covington Aircraft.
